Offering opportunities that encourage positive, independent thinking

Opportunity

We encourage all our children to engage in group and individual activities. We encourage them to pursue leisure interests that consider their abilities, culture, race, religion and language.

Within our homes, a balance is sought between organised activities and unstructured time that children can occupy how they choose, whether by watching television or playing age-appropriate games on consoles. Serenity Smiles policy states children can only have access to games and media that are age-appropriate.

Activities available to our children include:

Any new interest, hobby or activity that is appropriate is encouraged and developed. Children also participate in planned holidays and short breaks. Such trips are organised with the young person, the home manager and their social worker or parents. Children are given the freedom to plan their breaks, and our staff provides a detailed overview, including risk assessments, budgets, and itineraries.

Commitment

At Serenity Smiles, we maintain a commitment to providing opportunities that allow children to act and think for themselves while remaining safe.

This is reflected in what activities we agree for them to do. For example, considering their age and ability, if we deem it appropriate for a young person to go to the shops on their own, we undertake a full risk assessment for the activity. Risk assessments are conducted for all activities to ensure they’re safe and that the young person isn’t at risk.
